Mr. Matthews is a member of the firm. He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar, and is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He graduated from Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972, and from the Seton Hall University School of Law, Cum Laude in 1975. He received a Master’s Degree in Taxation from New York University in 1979.
Mr. Matthews served as an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Newark from 1975 to 1980, primarily handling claims asserted against the City pursuant to the New Jersey Tort Claims Act, but also handling a wide variety of municipal matters. From 1980 through 1983, Mr. Matthews served as an Assistant Essex County Counsel, and as Chief of the Claims Section in that office. As such, he was responsible for overseeing all of the Tort Claims Act litigation against the County, which was self-insured.
Mr. Matthews joined a predecessor to the present firm in May of 1983 and became a partner in 1987. He has handled, almost exclusively, the defense of personal injury matters involving automobile claims, premises liability, and similar claims. Additionally, related claims involving uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, declaratory judgment actions and personal injury protection claims have been defended. Mr. Matthews serves as an attorney for the Suburban Essex Joint Insurance Fund, representing municipalities in defense of Tort Claims Act suits.
Mr. Matthews is a member of the American Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Essex County Bar Association.
